Today the Black Health Care Coalition sponsors a variety of programs in Kansas and Missouri. For information call or email the staff person listed at our office. The centers provide regular blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose testing. Churches’ Health Committees decide hours of operation. Currently we sponsor centers at Palestine Missionary Baptist Church and Metropolitan Missionary Baptist in Missouri and at St. Peters CME and Faith Lutheran Church in Kansas. We’ve recently agreed to open centers at St. John Baptist in KCKS and Friendship Missionary Baptist and Christ Our Redeemer AME in KCMO.

African Americans are generally found to have greater rates of overweight and obese members of the population, and this is true for African American teens as well. Healthy Lifestyles, funded by the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City, targets young people aged 4-18, teaching them healthy eating and fun exercise habits with the participation of a Nutritionist and a Fitness Expert. They also get “Life skills Coaching” from the program’s Health Coordinator, Rev. Shaun Hayes. Our diabetes programs were developed with funding from the Wyandotte Health Foundation and are currently funded by the Prime Health Foundation. It’s a comprehensive approach to helping diabetics (especially newly diagnosed diabetics) manage their disease. Educational sessions help participants explore some of the health effects they can expect from diabetes and things they can do to prevent negative outcomes. A Dietician presents weekly nutritious meal alternatives; there is also a weekly exercise class. Most classes are held in local churches.
There are also Walking Clubs in Kansas and Missouri.

African American males have the highest rate of prostate cancer in the world, are at risk for more aggressive forms of the disease, and are at higher risk of dying from it than are white males. We no longer have grant support for this program, but will schedule PSA Blood Testing at community sites for groups with 15 or men over the age of 40.
For information contact Doris Grant.
BHCC knows the importance of providing education about the devastating effect of HIV/AIDS on the African American community. We offer HIV prevention education and confidential testing. For more information or to schedule an HIV test, contact DeMarco Vaughn.
Lead paint poisoning and asthma are two environmental health hazards that disproportionately affect children in urban areas. BHCC’s newest program offers parents education about these health hazards and ways to reduce the risk to children. BHCC can help parents get children under the age of 6 tested for the presence of lead in their systems. We can also help parents reduce environmental risks for children who have asthma. For more information contact Doris Grant. BHCC staff persons are available to participate in community health fairs. We can provide health education and screening for your group’s event. Call our office to schedule.
